Webinar: Food businesses of India – The story of the enterprises, the entrepreneurs and the employees

Tamara Jackson

Want to know more about India’s food economy outside the farm gate?

There are 21 million food enterprises in India that serve as vital links between the 146 million farmers and 1.3 billion consumers, engage 25 million men and 10 million women as entrepreneurs and employees, and contributed $43 billion in gross value added to the economy. These off-farm enterprises have been a significant driver of growth in India’s food economy in recent years.

Despite their large and growing importance for the food system and the overall economy, there is very little research on food enterprises in India. This presentation will focus on what, who and how these businesses create links between food that is produced and consumed.

Dr Avinash Kishore from IFPRI will present findings from his study into this large and growing part of the food system, and explore the opportunities they provide for rural households.
